THE DHAMMACAKKA FESTIVAL 2021
(ESALA CELEBRATION)
The Dhammacakka (Esala) Festival marks the delivering of the First Sermon known as Setting in Motion the Wheel of Truth (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) by the Buddha, in the Deer Park at Isipatana, near Benares, India. This event was celebrated at the London Buddhist Vihara on Sunday, 25 July 2021.
Due to the restrictions imposed by the current pandemic, the Vihara was unable to accomodate the usual number of devotees, therefore the days events were live streamed on the Vihara YouTube and Facebook channels.
The days programme commenced with admistering the Eight Precepts by the Most Ven. B. Seelawimala Nayaka.
A sermon "Setting in motion of The Wheel of Dhamma" was given by Ven T Bandula
A sermon Satta Jatila Sutta (Discourse on the Seven Ascetics) Content: How to Recognise Persons by Ven. Mediyawe Piyarathana, (PhD TESOL Candidate, UK, Senior Lecturer in English, Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura was delivered on Zoom.
A Sermon in Sinhala was delivered by Ven. Seelawimala Nayaka Thera, and was followed by Vas Aradhana - a formal invitation to the resident monks to observe the rainy retreat.
The monks chanted the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (The First Sermon of the Buddha) and the days event concluded with Puja & Punyanumodana (sharing of merit)
