Sanghamitta Day 2023
Sanghamitta Day Celebrations were held at the London Buddhist Vihara on Sunday, 17th December 2023, commencing at 9.00 am.
This festival is unique to Sri Lanka as it commemorates the arrival of Sanghamitta, the daughter of Emperor Asoka of India, for the purpose of establishing the Bhikkhuni Order in the island. This day is also of universal significance to Buddhists as Sanghamitta brought with her a sapling of the Bodhi Tree from Buddha Gaya. The sapling, planted at Anuradhapura in 245 BCE is today regarded as the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world.
The days proceedings started with administering Eight Precepts by Most Venerable Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thera, head of the Vihara.
This was followed by a number of events which included meditation and a dhamma talk by Sister Khema, a senior nun from Amaravati monastery.
Over forty devotees observed the Eight Precepts.
The event was sponsored by the Past Pupils Association of St Paul's Girls School, Milagiriya-UK branch.
The days events were live streamed on the Vihara YouTube and Facebook channels.
