The Dhammacakka Festival was held on Sunday 21 July 2024 at the London Buddhist Vihara.

The Esala falls on the full moon day in July and marks the First Sermon by the Buddha after his enlightenment. The sermon was delivered to the five ascetics in the Deer Park at Isipatana, near Benaris in India.

The Dhammacakkapavattana sutta is known as Setting in Motion the Wheel of Truth.

The event was attended by over 100 devotees and over 60 devotees observed the Eight Precepts (Ata sil) for the day.

At the end of the day's event, the resident monks at the London Buddhist Vihara were formally invited to observe the traditional rainy retreat (Vas Aradhana) which dates back to the time of the Buddha.

This was followed by the monks chanting the Dhammacakkappavatana sutta.

This year the following dayakas undertook to look after the resident monks during the Vas period of three months which will end with the Kathina celebrations on 3 November.
