Ordination Ceremony of Ven K Sukhitamano
Ven Sukhitamano who has been a resident novice monk at the London Buddhist Vihara obtained Upasampada (Higher ordination) at a ceremony held at the Wat Mahathat, Thai Vipassana Meditation Centre at Kings Bromley, Burton-on-Trent (near the city of Birmingham) on Sunday, 16 June 2024.
This ordination dates back to the time of the Buddha, and the procedures are laid down in the vinaya pitaka (the code of discipline). A monk who has been so ordained is admitted to the Sangha as a bhikku.
Traditionally, the upasampada ceremony is performed within a well-demarcated and consecreted area called sima.The suitability of the candidate is assessed by three senior monks as stipulated in the vinaya, and if the criteria is satisfied, he or she is admitted to the order.
The ceremony was conducted by the Most Ven. Dr Phramaha Laow Panyasiri Thero, abbot of Wat Mahathat, and Most Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Thero, Head monk at the London Buddhist Vihara.
The ordination was attended by 26 monks from a number of Buddhist temples in England and over a hundred lay supporters.
